Should Canadian Travelers Exchange Canadian Dollars in Morocco?

Should Canadian Travelers Exchange Canadian Dollars in Morocco? A Complete Guide to Currency, Cash, and Money Tips

Yes, Canadian travelers can exchange Canadian dollars in Morocco, but it is usually more practical to obtain Moroccan dirhams (MAD) after arrival through licensed exchange offices or ATMs rather than exchanging large amounts before departure. Morocco’s official currency is the Moroccan dirham, and it is the only currency accepted for most everyday purchases.

If you’re asking, Should Canadian travelers exchange Canadian dollars in Morocco?, the short answer is yes—but with a strategy. Instead of carrying large amounts of cash, most travelers benefit from combining international payment cards with moderate cash withdrawals or exchanges in Morocco. This approach is convenient, secure, and often offers competitive exchange rates.

Every traveler wants something a little different — that's exactly how we plan.

Tell us how much time you have, where you're starting from, and what draws you to Chefchaouen — the mountains, the photography, the quiet, the handicrafts, or simply a break from the bigger cities. We'll build a private itinerary around that, from your arrival to your final transfer.

Plan Your Morocco Tour Now

Why You Need Moroccan Dirhams

Although Canadian dollars are a stable international currency, they are not accepted for everyday transactions in Morocco.

The official currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD), and nearly all purchases must be made in local currency.

You’ll need dirhams for:

  • Taxis
  • Traditional markets (souks)
  • Small cafés
  • Local restaurants
  • Museum entrance fees
  • Public transportation
  • Tips
  • Small neighborhood shops

Large hotels or tour operators may occasionally exchange foreign currency, but this should not be your primary plan.

Should Canadian Travelers Exchange Canadian Dollars in Morocco Before or After Arrival?

For most visitors, after arrival is the better option.

The Moroccan dirham is a restricted currency, meaning it is generally unavailable outside Morocco or only available in limited quantities.

Because of this, many Canadian travelers choose one of these options:

  • Withdraw dirhams from a Moroccan ATM.
  • Exchange Canadian dollars at a licensed exchange office.
  • Exchange a small amount at the airport, then use city exchange offices if needed.

This method provides flexibility while avoiding the challenge of finding Moroccan currency before departure.

Where Can You Exchange Canadian Dollars?

Exchanging Canadian dollars is straightforward in Morocco’s main tourist destinations.

Common places include:

Licensed Currency Exchange Offices

These are widely available in cities such as Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, and Agadir.

Many display exchange rates clearly.

Banks

Several Moroccan banks exchange major foreign currencies during business hours.

Processing may take slightly longer than at dedicated exchange offices.

Airports

Airport exchange counters offer convenience after arrival.

However, rates may be less favorable than those available in city centers.

Hotels

Some international hotels exchange foreign currency for guests.

Nevertheless, exchange rates may not be the most competitive.

Using ATMs Instead of Carrying Large Amounts of Cash

Many experienced travelers prefer using ATMs.

Morocco has an extensive ATM network in major cities and tourist areas.

You’ll find ATMs at:

  • Airports
  • Banks
  • Shopping centers
  • Commercial districts
  • Some hotels

International debit cards linked to Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus, or Maestro networks are widely accepted.

Before traveling, notify your bank of your travel dates to reduce the chance of security blocks.

Additionally, review any foreign transaction or withdrawal fees.

Can You Pay with Canadian Dollars?

Generally, no.

Moroccan businesses expect payment in Moroccan dirhams.

Even if a merchant agrees to accept Canadian dollars, the exchange rate offered is unlikely to be favorable.

Therefore, paying directly in local currency is usually the most economical option.

This also simplifies transactions and avoids confusion over conversion rates.

Should Canadian Travelers Exchange Canadian Dollars in Morocco or Use Credit Cards?

The best approach is to use both.

Credit cards work well for larger purchases, while cash remains essential for smaller expenses.

Credit cards are commonly accepted at:

  • Hotels
  • Luxury riads
  • Car rental agencies
  • Upscale restaurants
  • Shopping malls
  • Many tour operators

Cash is usually preferred for:

  • Local markets
  • Street food
  • Small cafés
  • Taxis
  • Rural villages
  • Gratuities

Using both payment methods provides maximum flexibility throughout your trip.

Which Credit Cards Work Best?

Visa and Mastercard have the broadest acceptance in Morocco.

American Express is accepted at some luxury establishments but is less common elsewhere.

If possible, bring:

  • One Visa card
  • One Mastercard
  • One debit card for ATM withdrawals

Having multiple payment methods provides a backup if one card is lost or temporarily blocked.

Understanding Exchange Rates and Fees

Exchange rates change daily.

Before exchanging money, compare rates at several licensed providers.

Also, consider:

  • Foreign transaction fees
  • ATM withdrawal fees
  • Dynamic currency conversion (DCC)

Whenever a payment terminal or ATM offers to charge your card in Canadian dollars instead of Moroccan dirhams, choosing Moroccan dirhams often results in a better exchange rate from your card issuer. This is commonly recommended by financial institutions, although individual card terms vary.

How Much Cash Should You Carry?

There’s no single amount that suits every traveler.

Instead of carrying large sums, withdraw or exchange moderate amounts during your trip.

This approach:

  • Reduces theft risk
  • Makes budgeting easier
  • Minimizes unused currency at the end of your trip
  • Allows you to adapt to changing needs

Many travelers keep enough cash for one or two days and replenish it when necessary.

Is It Safe to Carry Cash?

Yes, provided you follow normal travel precautions.

Keep your money secure by:

  • Using a hotel safe for extra cash.
  • Carrying only what you need each day.
  • Dividing cash between different bags or pockets.
  • Monitoring your belongings in crowded areas.

These simple habits reduce unnecessary risk while traveling.

Shopping and Currency in Morocco

Shopping is one of Morocco’s greatest attractions.

Popular purchases include:

  • Handmade rugs
  • Leather goods
  • Pottery
  • Jewelry
  • Argan oil
  • Spices
  • Decorative lanterns

Large artisan cooperatives often accept cards.

Traditional market vendors usually prefer cash.

Having Moroccan dirhams available makes bargaining and small purchases much easier.

My mom and I had an amazing 10-day tour of Morocco with Tilila Travel! From the initial planning to the end of our trip, the service was exceptional. Mohammed was incredibly responsive, accommodating, and helpful throughout the planning process, and provided us with a detailed itinerary that made everything seamless. Our driver, Abdel, was wonderful—professional, respectful, and always attentive to our needs. His positive attitude made the long drives between cities enjoyable, and we always felt safe and comfortable with him. Everything was extremely well organized, from hotel check-ins to the knowledgeable English-speaking guides in each city. We truly enjoyed our experience and would highly recommend Tilila Travel to anyone visiting Morocco!

We planned our adventure to Morocco just three weeks in advance and we knew that Mohamed/Tilila Travel was the way to go from the first email response we received. It was a weekend and Mohamed got right back to us! We asked so many questions and he answered every one so we felt confident about our itinerary, our packing list and everything! From the moment our driver, Yassin, picked us up at the Marrakech airport, we know we were in the best of hands! Yassin was such an experienced driver - he knew all of the different terrains and areas we passed through - he was a goldmine of knowledge, sharing with us so much information about the different areas and cultures. He was so thoughtful, making stops along the way to show us such neat things - like the wild monkeys, the argon oil area, the Berber rug factory, the gorge, every small detail enhanced our trip! We suggested a loose itinerary to Mohamed and planned the perfect trip for us, including beautiful and special riads and fascinating tours! The camel trip and overnight in the Sahara was absolutely incredible! Thanks to Mohamed and Yassin, we enjoyed the most wonderful journey through an amazing country! Yassin is the BEST and we made a lifelong friend in him - Mohamed too (even though we didn't get to meet him in person)!

We booked a 2 day private tour to the desert and had a great experience. The organization was smooth and everything went as planned. Both Mohamed, the manager, and Abdel, our guide, did an outstanding job! I fully recommend booking with Tilila Travel 👍🏻

My wife and I travelled in Morocco in early May. We used Tililia travel through a friend suggestion. The experience was wonderful. Our driver Yousef was terrific and was there from the start to the finish. He was there to pick us up from the airport, and drop us off at the end of the trip. We had plans and activities arranged every day and had the ability to make minor changes as deemed be necessary. The guides were good. We always felt safe and never had any issues communicating as everyone spoke English. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Morocco, and Tililia travel was a large part of the reason for a wonderful vacation. I would definitely recommend them for anyone visiting Morocco.

We just finished our tour yesterday. We love our tour guide, and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this tour. The tour has great balance among culture, nature, and historical sites. Our guide is super patient, kind, and attentive. He waited for our slow walking family members. When someone needs bathroom or water stop, he finds the clean roadside restaurants/shops. We have took guided tours in different countries. Our Morocco guide is head and shoulder above all the other tour guides we had before. Above was my trip in 2019. I just went again in March 2023. The tour is well organized. Itinerary was given to us in advance. There’s no surprise. Everything went smoothly. The driver was waiting for us at the airport. He drives the whole tour, polite, helpful, and always on time. The city guide in Fez was exceptional, she tailored tour to our specific interests. The cooking class arranged by Mohammed, the owner of Tilila Tour was amazing. Every time I make those dishes, I will be thinking about this trip. It was a great memory making trip.

I was connected with Tilila travels through Rough Guides. We worked with Mohamed , the owner, on the details and he accommodated all of our changes/request and were able to create a trip based on timing, budget, duration and things we wanted to see in Morocco. Communication prior and during the trip was excellent. Our trip started off with a guided tour of Marrakech with our guide, Ibrahim, who was fantastic - helped us find some off the grid souks and gave us a unique local perspective into Marrakech and its history that we would never have received on our own. I also was not feeling too hot and he made sure to check in and make stops when needed. Our driver, Mohamed (not the tour owner), for our 9 day road trip around Morocco, was a true superstar. He made our trip such an amazing adventure, paying attention to our likes and dislikes and really took care of us like family. All of our stops (Dades Gorge, Fes, Chefchaouen, Rabat, and Casablanca) were incredible to experience and the local city guides assigned to us took it to another level. The only exception was the Sahara desert camp which just wasn’t our cup of tea, but Mohamed the owner did address our feedback which was nice. Other than that, the whole trip was amazing and we would recommend Tilila to anyone looking to visit Morocco.

My husband and I took a 9-day tour of Morocco with Tilila Travel in April 2026. Our expectations were exceeded! The company is very professional and responsive, but most importantly they were there for us every time! We felt completely safe and cared for while we traveled across the beautiful country of Morocco. I have some mobility issues, and Tilila was great about making accommodations for me. They let me pick and choose activities, and they were able to shorten some things that were too hard for me. Accommodations were beautiful and some of them were really wonderful! All of them were comfortable and our needs were always met. When my husband was hit with a GI bug, our driver took us to a pharmacy where he was able to get antibiotics and felt better quickly! Speaking of drivers, Walid was the best! Kind, patient and the best driver I ever saw. Always available and treated us so well! We LOVED our trip and would always recommend Tilila Travel!

We had a fantastic experience on this trip and really enjoyed every part of it. The itinerary through Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, the Sahara, and Marrakech was very well planned, and everything ran smoothly. All the accommodations were exactly as described—comfortable, clean, and well located. A special mention for our driver, Ali, who was friendly, punctual, and very professional throughout. He made the long drives easy and was always accommodating. The Sahara experience was a highlight—the camel ride and ATV were especially memorable. For an 8-day trip, there is naturally quite a bit of driving involved. If we were to do it again, we might consider trimming one or two stops just to allow for a slightly more relaxed pace—but overall, the itinerary was very enjoyable and well put together. Overall, the service and execution were excellent. We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking for a well-organized and memorable Morocco experience.
